Everyone recognises the need to drive safely on Irish roads, and when it comes to mobile phone use in vehicles, it is easy to remain safe if we all follow some simple guidelines.
Here are our top tips for safe driving in relation to mobile phone use:
- Never operate any hand held device while driving
- Only check your voicemail when you are parked and it is safe to do so
- Never send or read text messages while driving
- If you have to receive a call, pull in at the nearest point where it is safe to do so

By following these simple steps, we can all make Irish roads a safer place to be. Under the Road Traffic Act 2006 (Section 3) it is illegal to operate a hand held mobile phone while driving. This does not include the use of Bluetooth and other hands free devices. As well as this, remember, that according to the Road Traffic Act, a driver who is found holding a mobile phone will incur 2 penalty points. They will also either have to pay a fixed charge of €60 within 28 days from date of issue of a Fixed Charge Notice by the Gardaí, or €90 if paid within the next 28 day period. If convicted in court, a driver will incur 4 penalty points and could face a maximum fine of €2,000.
