Meteor supports new initiative to teach over 55's and people with disabilities how to use mobile phones

Amanda Carroll from Meteor joins students and tutors from the Drogheda Partnership's Access Skillsand Content Initiative Programme

Meteor has announced that it has become the official sponsor for the Drogheda Partnership's ‘Access Skills and Content Initiative' programme. The Partnership offers technology skills classes to over 55's and people with disabilities as a means of helping them to understand the most important aspects of modern technology.

The classes teach the groups how to operate a mobile phone, including making and receiving calls, sending text messages, adding a contact and the other useful features available to mobile phone users.

As well as sponsoring the programme and providing the mobile requirements for the classes, Meteor staff are also participating in tutoring the classes. This involves giving handset demonstrations, advice and assistance on how to operate a mobile phone and how to choose the most suitable mobile to meet the students' needs.

Commenting on the sponsorship Amanda Carroll, Meteor's Media and PR Manager said "Mobile phone penetration is at 114% in Ireland yet a significant proportion of adults over 55 and people with disabilities have never had the opportunity to learn how to operate a mobile, one of the most popular communication tools today.

At Meteor we are committed to offering a quality mobile service to our customers of all ages, therefore,  we are delighted to support this worthwhile training programme that will help the over 55's  and people with disabilities to keep in touch with friends and family whenever, wherever, this holiday season" she added.

Ina McCrumlish, Project co-ordinator with the Drogheda Partnership added "the sponsorship of the mobile phones by Meteor has been a huge asset to the trainees.  For many it is the first time that they have used a mobile.  For others they admitted to being able to receive a call but were unable to send or receive a text. It is only by working together we can bridge the digital divide".

Along with this new sponsorship, Meteor also offers helpful advice and information for the elderly and people with disabilities when choosing a mobile phone. They recommend certain handsets with useful features such as large screen display for the visually impaired , and top tips for making the best of your mobile phone.
