Irish Eyes are smiling at the 2009 Meteor Ireland Music Awards. Winners Announced!

It was a Paddy’s Day to remember for the winners of the 2009 Meteor Ireland Music Awards, where the best of Irish and International artists were celebrated in the RDS in Dublin.  Presented by the beautiful and vivacious Amanda Byram, nineteen awards were handed out to the deserving winners, eight of which were chosen by the public.

The biggest winners of the night were runaway success group The Script who won Best Irish Band and Best Irish Album as voted by the public.

The Best National DJ award went to Today FM’s Ray Foley for the second consecutive year with Dermot, Dave and Siobhan of Dublin’s 98 morning crew walking away with the Best Regional DJ award.  

Imelda May was voted ‘Best Irish Female’  by the Irish public who also entertained the crowd with her hit single ‘Johnny got a Boom Boom’ .

Cork man Mick Flannery was voted Best Irish Male and for the ninth consecutive year, while Westlife picked up the award for Best Irish Pop Act.

The Blizzards won Best Irish Live Performance for their gig at Oxegen last year while Wallis Bird picked up the Hope for 2009 Meteor Award presented by 2FM DJ Rick O’Shea.  The award was voted for by RTE 2FM listeners.
 
This year the Humanitarian Award was presented to Fr. Shay Cullen of the Preda Foundation, along with a cheque for €100,000 for the charity.

The Meteor Industry award was presented to renowned Hot Press editor Niall Stokes with Sharon Shannon picking up the Lifetime Achievement Award for her exceptional contribution to Irish music.

The 2009 Meteor Ireland Music Awards added glitz and glamour to the Irish St. Patrick’s Day festivities, with outstanding performances by Stereophonics, James Morrison, Enrique Igelsias, Elbow, Gabriella Cilmi, Imelda May, Duke Special, Boyzone and The Blizzards.

The night ended on a truly Irish feel with Sharon Shannon and Mundy wowing the crowd with the Most Downloaded Song for a second year running, Galway Girl.

International stars of sport, music and screen presented awards on the night including Padraig Harrington, Louis Walsh, Pat Kenny, Jasmine Guinness, Caprice, Bernard Dunne and The Simpsons’ Nancy Cartwright.

The Meteor Ireland Music Awards show will be broadcast RTÉ Two at 9.00pm on Wednesday 18th March.
