THE 21st King of the Culchies is announced in Leitrim

AS PART OF METEOR’S BRINGING THE CRAIC BACK CAMPAIGN

Shane McKeown from Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim wins the coveted title of King of the Culchies 2010!

It was a closely fought battle right up until the new King of the Culchies was announced at midnight last night, in Mohill, County Leitrim as part of the 21st annual Irish Culchie Festival. The contestants, flanked by their escorts for the weekends, the Meteor Maids, included the first ever ‘naked culchie’ and came from all over the country, except Dublin of course!, all hoping to win the coveted title.

Winner and King of The Culchies 2010, was Shane McKeown from Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim, who was a first time entrant to the competition. Commenting on his win, Shane said; ‘It was mighty for me to finally bring an All Ireland Title to the lovely county and I am really looking forward to all the duties that come with being King of The Culchies 2010’.

Descried as a ‘Rose of Tralee’ for men, the 19 participatingculchies had a tough three days in front of the judges.  Competition was fierce as the entrants had to take part in a fashion show and talent show, as well as prove their overall devotion to the culchie lifestyle. A true culchie has the ability to entertain at will, whether on stage or TV. The crowds who turned out to cheer on the entrants were suitably entertained over the three days by the contestants with a host of singing, dancing, miming and acting.

The festival, which took place over the October bank holiday weekend, was all part of Meteor’s Bringing The Craic Back campaign and was full of wacky events celebrating all things country: from the first search for Super Gran, the Culchie fashion show, Culchie Karaoke, the annual Honda Step-Thru Run, and the world record breaking ‘Meteor’s the most underpants put on in one hour’ challenge’. Competition was rife throughout the weekend with the Women in Wellies competition, the Junior Culchie competition and the battle for the title of King of The Culchies to name but a few.

The festival this year will no doubt make international news as i102 DJ Fergal Darcy successfully completed a world record challenge. He set a brand new world record in ‘Meteor’s the most underpants put on in one hour challenge’ by beating the previous world record of 144 pairs by a staggering 97 pairs, which was previously held by English man Lee Phillips. Fergal Darcy now holds the world record for the greatest amount of underpants put on in one hour, having put a phenomenal 241 pairs on in just 35 minutes, 45 seconds!

The Culchie Festival is all part of Meteor’s Bringing The Craic Back Campaign. Meteor’s Head of PR Amanda Carroll said:“The Culchie Festival has been brilliant craic this weekend, we’ve seen the search for Super Gran, the battle for the King of The Culchies and Culchie Karaoke as well as host of other fantastic events. A massive congratulations to Fergal Darcy on his world record breaker in ‘Meteor’s the most underpants put on in one hour challenge’.
