Steps to be completed before you can use an iPhone 5 for the first time

There are a number of key steps that should be completed before a customer tries to use their iPhone for the first time. In order to complete these steps a customer must already have an iTunes account set up. They can set up an iTunes account at www.itunes.com/download. The iPhone 5 does not use a standard SIM card so customers will be given a Nano SIM with their new iPhone 5.

It is essential that customers realise the following steps must be completed before their iPhone can be used for the first time


Step 1

Customers should back up all their contacts and calendar details. This can be undertaken in store via the SIM card reader, or alternatively customers themselves utilising an online back-up service or PC/Mac synchronisation and backup.

Step 2

To activate their iPhone the customer simply inserts the Nano SIM into their iPhone. Customers will find a small metal tool that looks a little like a paperclip in the box their iPhone came in. This is used for opening the Nano SIM card tray on the right side of the iPhone.


They must then connect the phone to their computer and use iTunes to set up, register and sync content. iTunes will take the customer through the set up process. The latest version of iTunes can be downloaded at www.itunes.com/download. If the customer doesn’t have an iTunes account they must set one up first. 

Step 3

The final step is for the customer to sync their contacts details onto their iPhone 5. They need to download their contacts and calendar details from the back up option they used in step 1.

Keeping track of your data usage on an iPhone is very easy.

1. Press the menu button
2. Select settings icon
3. Select General option
4. Select usage option
5. Scroll down to Cellular Network Data
   Here you will see the amount of data your phone has sent and received.

Note: This is a running count since the last time you reset the counter. To reset the counter to zero you must scroll all the way to the bottom of the menu and select Reset Statistics.

How to set up email on an iPhone

1. Press the Menu button.
2. Select Settings icon.
3. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
4. Select which type of Email Account Type you wish to set up and follow the on screen instructions

If you want to set up a different type of pop account please select other.

5. Select Add Mail account.
6. Set the Name to the name you wish to see in your mail box list
7. Then enter the Email Address of the email account you wish to set up
8. Enter your Password to your email account.
9. Set Description to whatever you want i.e. work, personal, online shopping.
10. Select Save.
11. Select POP.
12. Set Name to your name.
13. Set Address to your email address for this account.
14. Set Description to whatever you want i.e. work, personal, online shopping.
15. Then move to Incoming mail server section.
16. Enter your host name to whatever you have been given by your email provider i.e pop.host.ie.
17. Enter your Username to the email address.
18. Enter your Password to your email account.
19. Then move to Outgoing mail server section.
20. Set Host name to whatever your email provider has given you i.e. mail.host.ie
21. Fill in your username.
22. Fill in your password
23. Select save in the top right hand corner

It’s often a good idea to passcode lock your iPhone giving you an extra layer of security over the personal data on your iPhone.

To passcode lock your phone:

1. Press the menu button
2. Select the settings icon
3. Select the general settings tab.
4. Select passcode lock
5. Select turn on Passcode lock
6. Enter your secure 4 digit passcode that you will remember
7. Re-enter  your secure 4 digit passcode as promted
8. Your phone is now protected by passcode locking

It’s quite easy once you have iTunes installed on your PC or Mac simply play your Meteor SIM into your iPhone and connect your phone to your computer via the USB cable provided with your iPhone.

Then open iTunes at this point and iTunes will promote you to “Update your carrier setting” as you can see below.



Just click update settings and iTunes will automatically install all your Meteor Settings onto your iPhone.
