General hotspot

Where do I put the SIM card that was provided in the box in the device?

Pop off the back of the device, remove the battery and you will see the slot where the SIM card should be inserted.

You can turn on the device by using the on/off button located on the left hand side of the device.

How do I charge the Broadband To Go Hotspot?

The Broadband To Go Hotspot can be charged over USB when you connect the device using the USB cable to the laptop.

How long does the battery last?

The battery life is about 5 hours. However, battery life depends on where you are using the device and what you are doing with the device. Using the Broadband To Go Hotspot in an area with poor coverage will drain the battery more quickly compared to when using it in a good coverage area. Also, the more connections to the device, will also drain the battery faster.

Do I have to switch on / switch off the device every time that I use it?

The device puts itself in a 'deep sleep' mode after 10 minutes of inactivity. To use it when it's in this state, you will have to wake it up by quickly clicking any of the buttons on the device. If you know you won't be using the device for a few hours then you should switch the device off.

I have forgotten the security key for Broadband To Go hotspot?

You can connect the device to the laptop using the USB cable provided and then use the Broadband To Go Homepage to set a new security key. Alternatively, you could press and hold down the on/off and WiFi buttons located on the left hand side of the device. This will reset all of your settings. You will now need to use the default SSID and security keys that you received with the Broadband To Go Hotspot.

How many devices can I have connected to the Broadband To Go hotspot at any one time?

The maximum number of wifi-enabled devices that can be simultaneously connected is 5. However, if multiple devices use the BBTG hotspot connection at the same time then the available internet bandwidth is shared amongst them which can lead to slower speeds.

Signal

How can I tell what network type I'm on when I’m using Broadband To Go?

The network you are on will be indicated on the bottom left-hand corner of the Broadband To Go Manager screen.

How can I improve my signal?

Our mobile broadband network is fast and most people will experience speeds in excess of 2 Mbps. Because mobile broadband uses a radio signal, the speed you will get depends on several factors like your signal strength, your location from the nearest transmitter, the construction of your building and weather conditions. If you find that you need to improve your download speed, you can try changing your location within your house, for e.g. moving upstairs or moving to a window location as signal strength can be hampered by thickness of walls.

Why can’t I connect to the Internet?

If you are having problems connecting to the internet:-

  • Make sure your PC has finished starting up before plugging your device into the USB port
  • Make sure your device is plugged into the USB port correctly so that it can be detected
  • Make sure your SIM card has been inserted correctly into the device. Try re-inserting your SIM card to ensure that it is securely in place.
  • Make sure your antivirus software or firewall is not interfering with connection. You may need to switch it off when installing the BBTG device or you have to 'allow' the software to connect to the internet when prompted.
  • Make sure that you are connected to the right network.
  • Make sure that you have sufficient coverage by checking the no. of bars on the signal bar which is located in the bottom left handside corner of the Broadband To Go Manager Screen.

I can connect but cannot browse?

Please check that you have sufficient credit on your Broadband to Go account. To check your balance, login to MyMeteor or text 50104 "mmb balance" from your Broadband To Go Manager Screen.

What does HSPA mean?

HSPA means High Speed Package Access. If you see this term on your Broadband To Go manager screen, it means you will be enjoying the fastest speeds that the Meteor 3G network has to offer.

Is upload and download usage taken out of my data allowance?

Yes. Both upload and download usage will contribute towards your data allowance. Similarly, if you go over your data allowance, your excess usage is calculated by adding together download and upload usage.

Will my 500 MB Day Pass or 7.5 GB 30 Day Pass cover me when I’m roaming?

I can connect and browse the internet but I find response times too slow when I am playing games. Is there way I can improve this?

Games take up more internet bandwidth so it best to make sure that your device is located in a place of good coverage, for e.g. try placing it on a window ledge instead of placing near a wall. Also, make sure you are not located in area where there is a large number of WiFi networks as this may also affect performance. When you are playing games, you should try to connect over the USB instead of WiFi connection.
