FAQ's VAT Price increases January 2012

  1. I am a Bill Pay customer and have just found out that I will have to pay the VAT increase however my friend has a Pre Pay account and does not. Why is this?
  2. We offer our bill pay customers the best value we can. Unfortunately, because of this we’re forced to pass on this VAT increase.

However, even after the VAT change, we can assure you that our bill pay plans still offer even better value than our prepay ones.

  3. You are increasing the cost of my Bill Pay plan. I should therefore be able to cancel my contract without penalties. Why can’t I cancel my contract?
  4. Everything will stay the same on your plan, excluding VAT, and unfortunately we have no control over that.

We’ve been very careful only to pass on the VAT increase and we won’t do anything sneaky in terms of rounding up prices: every cent goes straight to the government.

Of course, if we did change the price you are paying you would be well within your rights to break your agreement with us. But we won’t be doing that.

  5. Under Regulation 14 (of what)if you make any price changes you have to allow me to cancel my contract without penalties. You are infringing on my consumer rights.
  6. You’re quite right—you must be contacted and offered the opportunity to leave your contract without penalty if we change our prices or change the conditions in a way that disadvantages you. But we can guarantee you we won’t be doing that.

The VAT increase is an external change, imposed by the government, and unfortunately we have no control over it. As a result, regulation 14 does not apply. But if you have any doubts you should contact Comreg

  7. Where in the Ts & Cs in my contract does it say that you can increase charges to customers without prior notification?
  8.  Under section 6 we reserve the right to change our charges and agree to notify you of any change on our web site and in store, and we’ve made sure to do that.

Unfortunately, the VAT increase is an external change, which we have no control over. We are just passing on the VAT increase and will not be rounding up our prices. Every cent of the increase is going straight to the government.

  9. How can I get a copy of these Ts & Cs?
  10. You can find them on our website by visiting www.meteor.ie/support/terms_and_cond.

  11. I am a Bill Pay customer. Why are you treating me differently to pre pay customers?
  12. We understand it may seem unfair but we offer our bill pay customers the best value we can. Unfortunately, because of this we’re forced to pass on this VAT increase.

However, even after the VAT change, we can assure you that our bill pay plans still offer even better value than our prepay ones.

  13. Why did Meteor absorb the VAT increase last time but not this time?
  14. We wish we could do the same again this time. But the plans we offer our bill pay customers are as low as they can possibly be—they are the best value that we offer.

Because of this, we can’t afford to absorb the increase again. But you can be sure, even with this external increase that we’ll continue to offer the best possible rates.

  15. I want to move to Pre Pay so that I don’t have to pay the VAT increase. Why can I not cancel my contract and move to Pre Pay?
  16. Even with this external increase, our billpay plans still represent better value to you than our prepay prices.

If you want to you can still cancel your contract, but it would mean having to settle the agreement that was originally made.

  17. I want to lodge a formal complaint as I do not agree to pay this increase.
  18. If you want to lodge a complaint you can fill in the complaint form on meteor.ie

  19. I am a Pre Pay customer. Are you going to increase the VAT charge for Pre Pay customers later on?
  20. The new vat rate of 23% comes into effect on the 1st Jan, but we will continue to pay the extra vat for all our prepay customers.
